DESIGNING

SURGICAL
PRECISION

INTELLITORQ

Gauthier Biomedical is a respected designer and manufacturer of orthopedic surgical tools. After introducing a new line of precision tools, they needed to get the attention of medical buyers to get these tools into the hands of Doctors.

The Challenge

Gauthier already has a highly regarded reputation in the surgical tool space, but it was time for the tools to catch up with technology. Gauthier's tool line included a torque limiter, which is used to attach surgical implants to bone. Their traditional mechanical torque limiter was fundamentally a torque wrench, but there were limitations in its accuracy which could lengthen recovery time if over or under tightened.

This tolerance of error is generally accepted in the medical industry, but Gauthier saw an opportunity to make it better. By building tools that use digital torque sensors instead of a series of gears, these tools could reduce the margin of error by an estimated 10%, which could reduce recovery time and prevent future surgeries. Now it was time to convince the medical buyers of the world of a better way.

THE SOLUTIONS

BRING THE PROTOTYPES TO LIFE

Since most of these tools were still their prototype stages, there weren't any photos of them yet. They did have rough CAD renders of the tools, but they weren't ready for the big stage yet. I worked with their Industrial Designers at Gauthier to develop renders that could be animated and exploded into different views. Now they had something to be be proud to show off at their next trade show.

FEEL THE FEEDBACK

Since all of the Intellitorq tools use Haptic Feedback (vibration) to indicate when the implant has been torqued to spec, it made sense to use an example that everyone could understand; their phone. I designed an interactive piece of the website that allowed users to turn the device and watch how the colors change as they approached the torque threshold. Once they hit the torque threshold, their phone would vibrate just like how the Intellitorq tools would vibrate. This helped sell the idea to prospective buyers without ever having to have the tool in their hands.
